Instructor Training Course - Parts 2 and 3

Driving Instructor Training Course – DSA Parts 2 and 3

The ‘Absolute’ instructor training programme is ideal for any person wishing to become a driving instructor and start a career in driving instruction.

The programme is structured in easily understandable modules to provide you with the opportunity to train at a pace to suit yourself  -  to a relaxed and personalised schedule n 2 hour, half day (3 hour) or full day (6 hour) training sessions.

  • We will provide advice to enable you to complete the DSA pre-training CRB (criminal records bureau) and Application processes, including guidance for passing the Theory & Hazard Perception elements.
  • Training sessions will supported by detailed and explicit course notes – for the part 2 driving elements and particularly for part 3.
  • The part 3 notes will not only detail ‘what’ to teach but also how to ‘teach’.
  • The course notes will include subjects and methods aimed at ‘collision reduction’ for newly qualified drivers.
  • Throughout we will explain and develop coaching techniques relevant to the training of drivers.

The average time to complete the qualification.

This will be influenced by a number of factors such as: -
  • how much time you devote to ‘private’ study and practice
  • your personal aptitude and speed of learning
  • how frequently you take training.
Part 2 - approximately 5 days (30 hours) to raise your personal driving to a consistent advanced standard and to lay the foundations and develop knowledge for part 3.

Part 3 – approximately 10 days (60 hours) to develop instruction techniques plus assessment and coaching skills.

Pre-Training Requirements

Step 1: Driving Licence:   You must have held a category B driving licence for at least 3½ years and have less than 6 points on the licence.

Step 2: Criminal record checks (CRB) for driving instructors Before starting the Potential Driving Instructors (PDI) qualification process, you will need to get an enhanced level criminal record check.

To apply for this, you will need to fill in a disclosure application form and send it to the Capita Recruitment Vetting Service (CRVS) - one of the Driving Standards Agency's (DSA) criminal record checks contractors. You can request a disclosure application form from the CRVS Helpline on Tel 0870 850 2455.

Step 3:  DSA Registration Once your CRB check has been satisfactorily completed and confirmed you may apply to register with DSA on-line.

Step 4: Training & Examinations

Part 1 – Theory & Hazard Perception (DSA currently do not limit number of attempts at this test)

A  DSA test of knowledge and basic hazard recognition. Normally you would study for this exam on your own using a proprietary CD or DVD pack. We recommend the Focus – ‘Driving Test Success ALL TESTS DVD’.  Training for this stage is not included in the course but we can supply the necessary CD /DVD’s if required.

You can start training for the Part 2 and 3 course elements at any time, if you wish you may start before you have completed Steps 1 & 2 above.

Part 2 – Driving Ability (1 hour DSA Practical assessment of your driving ability – DSA only allow 3 attempts at this exam)

We provide full practical in-car training to assess and bring your driving to the level for the examination.

We advise you to use your own vehicle, where possible, for the training and test. In your own vehicle you will normally feel more at ease. If your vehicle isn’t suitable you may use our one of vehicle. We include the basic elements of Part 3 Instructional Ability during the Part 2 training element.

Part 3 – Instructional Ability (1 hour DSA practical assessment of your ability to instruct. – DSA only allow 3 attempts at this exam)

We provide full training for all pre-set test modules and more plus we provide all necessary course notes and guidance to help you to succeed quickly and professionally. If you train for Part 2 with Absolute you will already have a good understanding of the requirements of part 3 before you start that element – putting you ahead of the rest.

Please note: -

  • Once you Pass part 1 the DSA regulations allow you 2 years to complete the part 2 & 3 examinations. If you do not successfully complete all of the examinations within the 2 years you will have to apply and re-sit all examinations again.

  • If you should fail at all 3 attempts, at part 2 or 3, you will have to wait until the 2 year period has elapsed before you are allowed to re-start the whole application and examination process again.

  • With proper training, and your own dedicated effort, you should never find yourself in this situation.
